The Italian side of our family calls my son Luigi, because he has a fire in his belly. He’s an unassuming, agreeable nine year old most of the time. Pretty black and white and follows the rules, spends most of his time in fantasy land. But he has that fire, and when the air gets to it, it flames up like a volcano erupting and ignites everything in it’s path. When he was a toddler, he’d yell at you with his hand firmly out, palm up, chopping up and down with every declaration. He’d look like a little old Italian man lecturing a young punk. Like he’s brought over some lifetime of knowledge from somewhere and he’s the authoritarian. We’ve worked hard over the years to help him control the flames. We’ve been consistent, we’ve outsourced help. It’s worked for the most part. He’s genuinely respectful most of the time. But it’s still there, those hot embers. A part of me admires his fire. That fearless ability to let it burst out and scorch somebody. He doesn’t run away or slink away unnoticed to the corner when confrontation arises. He stands firm and takes it, and when he can’t take it anymore, you better have the extinguisher ready.
